What are Emergency Child Care Services?

This service consists in giving support to military families that are experiencing an emergency situation, thus preserving support to military operations.

This policy is part of the Military Family Services Program (MFSP). It enables support to military families that concern short-term child care by offering help in some unique and complicated circumstances.

It is important to note that it is the serviceman’s responsibility to prepare a Family Care Plan (DOAD 5044-1A) in which he will note the resources which are qualified to take care of his (or her) family in his absence, if an emergency should arise at home. He must pass on this information to his spouse.

The MFRC assesses the needs of families and their eligibility on a case-by-case basis in order to take their needs into account.
When the service is offered at home, contract resources deployed by the MFRC provide the necessary help.

A maximum of 96 hours of child care may be offered at home or at the MFRC’s Respite Daycare, free of charge. Child care may be extended as needed. The situation will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the MFRC.

  • A parent who is alone with her children during the serviceman’s deployment who must go to the hospital in the middle of the night
  • A parent who, all of a sudden, is physically or mentally unable to take care of her children while the other parent is away on military duty
  • When a serviceman or member of his family is seriously ill and the other parent must accompany him to an appointment to get medical services
  • Temporary child care services offered upon arrival in the new posting location to look for a job (up to 3 months after the family’s arrival)

These examples do not represent all of the cases which are foreseen in the policy.

When needed, call the MFRC by dialing 418-677-7468 in order to see if your situation conforms to the policy’s directives.
