Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city.  The population of the city is roughly 3.2 million and the entire population of the Madrid metropolitan area is calculated to be around 6.5 million. It is the third largest city in the European Union, after London and Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the third-largest in the European Union after London and Paris.  The city spans a total of 604.32 km². 
The Madrid region experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool to cold winters due to its altitude of 646 metres above sea level.  Madrid winters can include sporadic snowfalls and minimum temperatures often below freezing.  Summers are hot with average July temperatures ranging between 31 and 33 C depending on location and temperatures tend to be the highest in August and can climb to over 35 C.
