Board of Directors
The Military Family Resource Centre is a registered non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of a minimum of 51% civilian spouses of full-time serving CF members. The Board requires a minimum participation of five voting members which are nominated and elected by the CF community. There are a variety of board positions required to fulfill the duties briefly outlined below.
The Board Chair supervises the affairs of the board as well the MFRC Executive Director. The member conducts board meetings, coordinates discussions, acts as one of the signing authorities, states motions before votes are taken, and meets with the Executive Committee between monthly board meetings.
This member is familiar with the duties of the Chair and presides at t he meetings in the Chair's absence. The member may replace the Chair are various functions when required to do so by the Board. They are a member of the Executive Committee, act as one of the signing authorities and ensure ongoing board member development.
The treasurer monitors the care and custody of all funds and securities within the corporation. They complete a monthly bank reconciliation, deposit all monies, review statement with the board, ensure an annual audit, act as a signing authority, present an annual report at the AGM, oversee budget development, Chairs the Finance Committee as well handles all financial policies and queries from the Board regarding the financial operations of the MFRC.
The position of secretary is to keep an accurate record of the monthly board meeting minutes. the member will copy and distribute required documentation to members and partake in general administrative duties as required by the Board.
Members at Large
Members are required to attend Board of Directors meetings and act as a voice for the military community at large. They provide voting on motions or actions to be taken by the Board and/or the MFRC. Members contribute to meetings by raising issues or concerns and offer suggestions that serve to better the military community as a whole.
How the Board of Directors plays a crucial role in the success of the MFRC
The GBMFRC is an incorporated not for profit charitable organization funded by Director Military Family Services (DOFFS) Governed by a Board of Directors of which 51% of the Board of Directors must be civilian spouses/partners of military members. This structure allows for the voice of the military spouse/partner to be heard and enables the Centre to truly meet the needs of the community.
- The Board approves the Military Family Services Program (MRS.) Funding Application, the budget and participates in the vision for the future.
- The Board is responsible for establishing the organization's vision and direction.
- The Board is responsible for the agency's future.
- The Board is responsible for sustaining itself through ongoing prospective Board Members.
- Participates in and approves Governance and Personnel policy.
- Attends Board Orientation & Board Development Training.
- Participates in developing recommendations/making decisions on governance issues.
- Attends regular Board Meetings and special meetings/events as required.
The Basic Roles of a Board Member:
- Provide leadership within the organization.
- Represent the organization and the membership in important matters.
- Assist in the planning of the goals of the organization.
- Enhance the organization's image in the community.
- Provide support to the Executive Director and Staff in carrying out their professional duties.
