Adult Programs (H&R MFRC)

Adult programs promote personal growth, skills development, and social and community connections. These programs are open to adults aged 18 and older.

Coffee Connections (19+)

Coffee Connection is a growing community-based program for military family members, aged 19+. All are welcome and have the opportunity to get together and share some common experiences while socializing and interacting with others.

Dates: Fridays, starting January 10, 2020 | 9:15 – 11:15am

Cost: $1 ** Program Related Child Care is $3/child or $6/family

Book Club (18+)

Book Club is a community-based program for military family members, aged 18+, who are avid readers.  All are welcome to meet and discuss the book of the month and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. For a list of selected books for these months, please call: 902-427-7788.

FINANCIAL PLANNING FOR RELEASE & RETIREMENT (19+)

This program is a partnership with SISIP Financial to help provide important information for those planning for release and retirement. Information will include:

  • Income statement/ budgets
  • Monthly planning now vs retirement
  • Exploring your debt load (what you will need to make to ensure payment of debt after transition)
  • Life insurance
  • Saving for the “gap” transition between “CAF life and Civy life”
  • What to expect when retiring

Military 101: Virtual workshop

When a member of your family joins the military it can sometimes be a confusing new world to understand. This fun and interactive virtual workshop offers a 1-hour introduction to the military and the military lifestyle. Topics will include: Overview of the Canadian Armed Forces, rank structure, acronyms and abbreviations and much more!

Scholarship Workshop Series: Virtual workshop (19+)

These workshops show students of all ages how to find scholarship dollars, and provides pointers on how to write the winning scholarship essay. This series shows that scholarships are for everyone from 16 to 96 and from entry level post secondary to doctorate degrees.  Did you know that there are more than 7 million dollars of scholarships that go unclaimed each year simply because no one has applied?  Come join us, stake your claim, apply!

Where it all begins – Information Session for Families of New Recruits:Wher(19+)

Is your loved one going to basic training? Is this your first experience as a military family? Are you unsure as to what to expect? Do you have lots of questions? This interactive virtual session will help you understand what to expect and will give you an opportunity to have your questions answered by knowledgeable, experienced staff.   In collaboration with the London MFRC, the H&R MFRC is hosting this information session, which is open to all military families.

Compassion Fatigue (19+)

Are You a Caregiver? Is someone you care for medically releasing or is a medically released Veteran? Looking for coping skills & self-care techniques to help prevent burnout? This training will enhance your coping skills and help improve self-care techniques so you can continue caring for others!

This is a highly interactive one-day workshop, incorporating a combination of individual, small group and whole group activities. The topics that will be covered include:

  • Understanding compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout.
  • Symptoms checklist, targeting area for strategic planning.
  • Evaluating self-care, identifying triggers.
  • Developing a personalized strategic plan for identifying and treating compassion fatigue.

Mental Health 1st Aid for the Veteran Community (19+)

This Mental Health First Aid Veteran Community workshop is tailored to address the needs of Canadian Armed Forces Veterans and the people who care for and about them. Participants in this course could vary immensely, but all will have some connection to the Veteran Community. This includes Veterans themselves, former members of the RCMP, family members, friends, relatives, health professionals, providers of Veteran services, volunteers, and other caring community members. The two-day (13 hour) course aims to: 

  • Increase the skills and confidence to engage in effective conversations about mental health in the Veteran community 
  • Promote greater recognition of the most common mental health problems and illnesses 
  • Decrease stigma and discrimination around mental health problems and illnesses 
  • Increase confidence, and willingness, to provide help to others 
  • Improve mental health of the MHFA participant her/himself.
