Aquatic Leadership

Shearwater Fitness and Sports Centre is pleased to provide a variety of aquatic leadership training! Please find below details regarding the courses that we are able to offer.


 

Bronze Star

 
Dates: TBD
Program will run once per week for 1.5hrs for 8 weeks

This course is 10-12 hours for youth age 9-13 years old.

Excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes a timed 400 m swim.
 
Prerequisite: None, swimming lesson experience recommended.
 
Evaluation & Certification: this course is evaluated by the instructor. 100% attendance is required.
 
Cost:
Regular: $65.00 + HST
Ordinary: $80.00 + HST
Associate: $95.00 + HST
 

 

Bronze Medallion

 
Dates: TBD

Program will run over three weekends on Saturday, and Sunday for 5hrs

This course is 18-20 hours for ages 13 years and up, or for those who have successful completed of Bronze Star.
 
Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the 4 components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m timed swim.
 
Prerequisite: This course is 18-20 hours for ages 13 years and up, or for those who have successfully completed Bronze Star.

Evaluation & certification: Many of the skills in this course are instructor evaluated, but only certified examiners are able to certify candidates. 100% attendance is required.

Bronze Cross

 

Dates: TBD

Program will run over three weekends on Saturday, and Sunday for 5hrs
 
This course is 18-20 hours for those who have successfully completed Bronze Medallion.
 
Designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 600 m swim.
 
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid certifications
 
Evaluation & certification:  Many of the skills in this course are instructor evaluated, but only certified examiners are able to certify candidates. 100% attendance is required.
 
Required reference material: Canadian Lifesaving Manual. Or must be purchased separately.
