Volunteer Profiles For families, by families

Unique Volunteer Contribution

You never know how your talents might help others.  When Maria Velasquez was doing online research to find a way to support military families, she had no idea her Masters degree in music performance would figure so prominently.

The talented soprano represented the MFRC when she sang the national anthem at the Vancouver Giants Military Family Game. Maria’s father was a World War II veteran in the Colombian navy, so she has sense of what it is to be a part of a military family.  Now in Canada, she has a desire to give back. “It was important for me to find a way to do something for those who support their country,” says Maria. “That’s how I found the MFRC.”
In addition to singing, Maria helps with other MFRC activities and volunteers as a photographer for the Vancouver Classic Guitar Society where her husband, also a musician, is a member.

Maria is accompanied by two Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Army cadets, a Royal Westminster Regiment Army cadet, and Major James Barrett, CD BCR (DCO) Commanding Officer 3300 BCR RCACC

The MFRC is always looking for new volunteers. Whether you’re interested in event support, clerical tasks, photography, or something we may not have even thought of yet, let us know.  For more information volunteer@bcmfrc.com.
