CISM International Athlete of the Year Able Seaman Yvette Yong

The Canadian Armed Force’s, Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Sport Staff are proud to announce that the International Military Sports Council (CISM) has chosen for the first time ever, a Canadian military member as athlete of the Year. Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) sailor, Able Seaman (AB) Yvette Yong, has been named as the International Military Female Athlete of the Year by the International Military Sports Council (CISM).

Able Seaman (AB) Yvette YongThe Royal Canadian Navy’s Able Seaman (AB) Yvette Yong, ranked number one in the world in Taekwondo in 2018, has been a rising star in the world of military sports and martial arts. She brought home the gold in the 2018 Pan American Taekwondo Championships where she represented the Canadian Armed Forces, and was ranked number one in the world in women’s fin weight category.

The award is presented to an athlete to recognize the most significant sportive performance and the promotion of CISM values such as fair play, personal empathy and discipline. This is the first time a Canadian Armed Forces member has had the honour of being named International Athlete of the Year.

Through the competitive military sport program coordinated by Personnel Support Programs (PSP), a part of Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS), AB Yong in 2018 won a gold medal at the CISM Taekwondo Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fitness and sport is an essential part of Canadian Armed Forces life, where being physically fit is an operational requirement. PSP Fitness and Sport programs support and allow members to maintain their fitness and creates opportunities for some to compete in sports programs at the local, national and international level.
